I got to experience the brand new TreeTops Canopy Tour last weekend, at our friends down the road, Class VI-Mountain River and Rivermen. They are calling it a world-class canopy tour, which is great marketing language (I should know, I am a marketer too), but having been on the course now, I believe it is indeed an accurate description. The entire canopy tour took a little over 3 hours to complete. From beginning to end I experienced the professionalism, high end equipment, strict safety procedures and thoughtful course design that maximizes the scenery and minimizes course impact. Wow. There are 10 ziplines, ranging in length from over 200+ feet to the longest at over 900 feet. Let me tell you, 900+ feet is an incredible ride. It is long enough to be able to breathe (for those of us willing to admit we aren't so comfy at dizzying heights!) and actually look around deeply. I had a fleeting appreciation for how birds feel flying through the treetops.
There are 4 skybridges (that's it to the right here), varying in length and they are swinging bridges. The course has a rappel at the end with the last zipline, neither were quite finished yet. The course tours thru the native hardwood and old hemlock forest of beautiful, undeveloped, Mill Creek, next to Rivermen's new campus. It's one creekbed over from the New River Gorge. Two things struck me about the course, the new state-of-the-art design uses double ziplines, jacketed in plastic sheathing so that they are actually almost silent. Very very cool. The harnesses we used are a combined waist and chest harness, again a very important consideration for a serious zipline. This keep you upright at all times when flying through the forest. I appreciated that! The tour opens up May 10th. Price is $89pp, you should be over 90 pounds to do it. One of the gals on the course with me weighed just barely 100 lbs and found she had to pull herself in for the last few feet on each zip, not enough weight to fly in! Overall, this tour is an experience not to be missed. I bet the tour becomes one of the southeastern must-do experiences going forward, certainly makes for an awesome West Virginia family vacation with bigger kids! Our Country Road Cabins are only minutes away from the TreeTops Canopy Tour start at Class VI-Mountain River. Spring is here in WV, come visit!
